2025-01-29: Copyright Infringement Complaint from Mojang
2025-01-29: 📥 Email received from Cloudflare T&S
Hello,
Cloudflare received a DMCA copyright infringement complaint regarding: revolt[.]chat
The information we received was the following:
Reporter’s Name: [omitted]
Reporter’s Email Address:[email protected]
Reporter’s Company Name: Mojang AB
Reporter’s Telephone Number: [omitted]
Reporter’s Address: [omitted]Reported URLs:
hxxps://app[.]revolt[.]chat/invite/[omitted]Original Work: Minecraft is a well known game. Please see
http://minecraft.net
for images, textures, and visual assets. We have forwarded this complaint to your hosting provider.
To respond to this issue, please reply to
[email protected]
.Thanks,
The Cloudflare Team
The invite link provided displays the following:
Upon inspection of the background and server contents:
- The background resembles a Minecraft clone, but no Minecraft textures/assets are in use.
- The server does not redistribute Mojang’s assets.
For reference, the following are the full resolution assets from the invite page:
NB. closer inspection of the screenshot above indicates that the textures in use are clearly not the textures used in Minecraft; what precedent does this set for other Minecraft clones such as Luanti (formerly Minetest)?
2025-01-29: 📤 Email sent to Cloudflare & Mojang Enforcement Team
Hello,
Upon review of the complaint, we have not found any evidence that any of Minecraft’s assets (images, textures, and visual assets) are being distributed at the given URL.
Kind regards,
Paul Makles

All textures that are being used are directly copy/past from Minecraft the game.
For context, none of these images exist on our servers.

Hi,
Thank you for your email. Could you please clarify what the images sent are intended to prove? As I understand it, the issue at hand is that this group is redistributing some of your proprietary assets through our site, which is why you filed the notice. However, we need to be able to identify where those assets are being redistributed to assist in removing them.
We are committed to cooperating fully with you to resolve this matter. However, if there are no such materials on our site, then unfortunately, there is no further action we can take on our end.
Best regards,
Paul Makles

Minecraft is a well known game. Once you create an account and log into the “app”, you will see gameplay that is an exact replica of Minecraft including gameplay, UX features, and specific block textures.
Based on our observation there are dozens of textures used. Examples…
Thanks for your support.
Given this email, it appears the most reasonable explanation is that there has been some confusion on Mojang’s end. If “app” does indeed refer to Revolt, they have failed to verify their claims, i.e. that we are a chat platform and are not actually hosting the game. If it does not, this once again does not have anything to do with us.

2025-02-02: 📤 Email sent to Hetzner Abuse
Hi,
We’re currently talking with the affected party to find out where the issue is, they’re being quite difficult and not providing any direct evidence of us hosting their copyrighted materials.Given their last email to us, I believe it’s possible they haven’t done due diligence in checking whether we are actually redistributing assets, they state that ‘Minecraft is a well known game. Once you create an account and log into the “app”, you will see gameplay that is an exact replica of Minecraft including gameplay, UX features, and specific block textures’. The implication is that the “app” is revolt.chat, but I can attest that we do not host any games, we are simply a communications platform where users can post messages to each other. I will be inquiring further on this claim and see what is going on.
I will CC in Hetzner on further correspondence we have with them, including the abuse ticket number so that it goes to the right place.
Lastly, apologies for the late reply to Hetzner, however I did not receive any email prior stating that we had to provide a statement or any response from Hetzner, only the initial Cloudflare email that indicated this had been forwarded to Hetzner (with no other details).
Best regards,
Paul Makles

Hello,
First of all, I’ve added Hetzner abuse to the email chain so they can stay in the loop.
Secondly, to potentially ease this situation, the background on the invite page has been removed and the chat group owner will be notified so they can pursue the matter with you directly if they wish to reinstate it.
Finally, I would like clarification on what “app” from your last email refers to. Particularly:
Once you create an account and log into the “app”, you will see gameplay that is an exact replica of Minecraft including gameplay, UX features, and specific block textures.
This leads me to believe that “app” refers to Revolt / revolt.chat, however in that case this statement is simply untrue, we are a communications platform and do not host any games.
Screenshots are provided below for reference, taken as of writing this email.
The Revolt messenger app
The invite page / reported URL
The “VoxelCore” chat group interface after “accepting invite”
Hopefully that helps clear up what we are actually hosting on our website.
Kind regards,
Paul Makles

Thanks. We will review the images and ensure they are correlated to the correct site/url. The report was very detailed and showed images shared in the chat. If there is no game play accessible via chat or being shared, then the “chat” app should be acceptable.
Thanks

Hi,
We’ve already spoken with the Mojang Enforcement team about this page, we do not have any evidence that Minecraft assets are being hosted at the given URL, then we also provided evidence on our end of what is actually hosted at the URL, and their last reply to us was:
Thanks. We will review the images and ensure they are correlated to the correct site/url. The report was very detailed and showed images shared in the chat. If there is no game play accessible via chat or being shared, then the “chat” app should be acceptable.
Thanks
We’ve received no further correspondence.
I’ve included three attachments that show:
- The Revolt messenger app
- The invite page / reported URL (what is actually present at the URL)
- The “VoxelCore” chat group interface after “accepting invite”
If there are indeed Minecraft assets being hosted on our service, please provide specific examples.
Kind Regards,
Paul Makles—
